Raspberry Slushie – Two Ways

A perfect substitute for your children who want that sugar laden slushie and you need a really awesome substitute!

Grandson Tommy walked in one day and announced he wish he could have a slushie and did I know how to make one.  My first thought and outloud to him was “slushie are only flavored sugar”.  Yes I am sure we all had a few in our youth.  Within minutes of really thinking about it, why not?   I had some frozen raspberries in my freezer so I asked Tommy if raspberries would do for the flavor and we would see what we could come up with.  He was in!

I pulled out the Vitamix because I knew I was going to need power to make that ice “slushie”. Tommy was definitely intrigued as we proceeded on with our test.  We gave it a whirl and dropped in some stevia and then gave it a taste.  One thing with liquid stevia … a few drops at a time and a taste test is very important.  You can’t go back!

We figured out the perfect sweet and tangy burst of flavor and Tommy was excited.  While he enjoyed his portion, I got to thinking that if someone wanted a creamy version they could add some milk or cream and some greek yogurt and create a creamier version.  This giving this refreshing treat some more nutrients.

What I really loved is a special treat for kids that I know is a healthier alternative.

Added bonus:  there was some leftover so I put it back in the freezer.  A few days later Hannah and Mason got to taste test when I took it out and let it melt for a few minute and put it in my bullet blender since it was already a slushie I didn’t have to worry about breaking down the ice.  Perfect!  Oh yes, they loved it.  Every once in a while I see them go to the freezer to see if there is another one waiting!

DK NOTES
Please note that the Carbs, Fiber and Sugar are all coming from the raspberries in the Icy version.
I made this on request from grandson Tommy. He wished I could make a slushie and of course those are laden with sugar. I decided to try with raspberries in my freezer. I made his without the milk and yogurt and he loved it. Which is not considering the alternative! I decided to make it creamy for a little more health benefits. So make it either way.

I also learned that blending more is best to get that crushed ice texture. My first go round wasn't as slushie as the ones I make now.
